A Good Runner is an online running course designed by the Love Trails team. You'll dive into mobility, strength and conditioning, mechanics, daily habits, stretching and explore what it means to be a good runner, and how as humans we are born to move & run.

11 classes & talks on Zoom, reading material, homework, group runs and more over 4 weeks.

Show up to every class with a notebook and pen, and to 4 of the 11 classes with a yoga mat if you have one.

On this 4-week online course, you will gain the knowledge, tools and mindset to become a confident, resilient, strong & mindful runner.

Lessons take place on 2 weekday evenings a week for 4 weeks. Additional bonus material will also be released each week. Lessons are streamed on Zoom. You will be sent the login details closer to the time.

If you can't make the lessons in person, don't panic. You will have 6-months access to all course materials, so you can watch them back or for the first time whenever you like.

Lesson 1. How to improve your running mechanics & pinpoint areas for improvement 

In this lesson you will understand why your running capacity is dictated just as much by your movement capacity, as it is by your aerobic capacity. We learn that a good runner is an efficient runner; and discover how to run whilst expelling minimal effort for maximum output. A series of four movement tests you'll perform at home allows you to benchmark your strength & mobility, so you can pinpoint areas you should focus on improving.


Lesson 2. Myth Busting & Insights with Special Guest

In this session we speak to an elite running coach about the common myths of running, pulling apart false claims, diving into research about human movement and helping us optimise our running potential.


Lesson 3. The Tiny Habits® Method for Good Runners

In this session you will learn how to design new habits into your daily routine in order to be a better runner, using the Tiny Habits® Method. Tiny Habits—created by Dr. BJ Fogg, a world-renowned Behavior Scientist at Stanford University—is based on 20 years of research and Dr. Fogg’s experience personally coaching over 40,000 people. Unlike anything that’s come before, this system—what Dr. Fogg has coined “Behavior Design”—cracks the code of habit formation.


Lesson 4. How to increase your mobility to become a better runner 

You will learn how mobility is the ability to recruit (use your muscles) actively within a stretched position. We will focus on the fundamental areas of your body where you need mobility as a runner; hips, ankles & hamstrings and the spine. You will learn 8 drills to take away to improve your mobility and create your own personalised mobility practice.


Lesson 5. How to train the small and large muscles in your foot to avoid injury 

This presentation will begin with a brief history and evolution of running footwear. Mechanics of different types of running footwear will be discussed. You'll learn about the concept of the foot core, and you'll be instructed in exercises to train the small and large muscles of the foot to build strength and prevent injury. You'll also learn progressions of these exercises to make them harder.


Lesson 6. Understanding the modern body to better know what you are capable of

In this lesson you will learn how your body evolved to move and run and you are going to get a quick masterclass on how modern living is shaping your body. This will better inform you expectations about your running and may even lengthen your life.


Lesson 7. How to use stretching to enhance your running practice 

You will learn the fundamental runners stretches to improve flexibility in your hips, hamstrights, glutes, calfs & lumber spine. By improving the range of movement you have in these areas, and combining this with good mobility and strength practices you will improve your movement capacity and thus be able to run further and faster without breaking down. You'll also lessen your chance of picking up an injury.


Lesson 8. How we adapt and progress through a training block

In this lesson you will learn what happens to the body whilst training, why we stress the body with certain sessions and how this helps us develop. We look at the importance of recovery and how to read the signs of potential injury. An important part of being a good runner is listening to your body and adapting to its needs. This lesson will give you the tools to train smart and reach the startline fighting fit.


Lesson 9. How to further unlock the power of running in your life

We all know the basics of running. We know the ‘ABC’ of it, that it makes us fitter and healthier. In this class, though, you will learn about the plethora of additional benefits that can be derived from running in certain environments. In short, you will discover how running can make you better at your job, more independent, a more attentive friend or partner, care more for the environment, enhance your concentration levels, improve exam results, and even feel better about your body image. You will then learn how to adjust your running practice to maximise these benefits.


Lesson 10. How to build strength & power for running

In this lesson you will learn that to run efficiently you must direct force correctly. You'll learn which muscles you use when you run, and how they work together to propel you forward. You will learn about the three forces at play as you run; downward force (the force you create), reaction force (the displacement force the ground creates) and gravity. You will learn how to improve your strength and power to run faster, stronger, more efficiently and with a lesser chance of picking up an injury. You will come away knowing fundamental strength & conditioning exercises to work muscles in your ankles, hips, quads, trunk and hamstrings.


Lesson 11. How to build your own training plan 

In the final session of A Good Runner we look at training structure. Whether you’re training for a race or looking to plan your running in a more efficient way, this session will teach you the best way to structure your time to gain the most from your workouts, avoid overuse injuries and fit your running around day-to-day life. We are all completely unique individuals, and so should our training plans be.
